Project Carputer

Wednesday, January 11th, 2006

With the water cooled pc project essentially finished I need something new. I could redesign and rebuild my MAME cabinet. Naw, I’ll save that for when I have a nice house with a big garage (see how I rationalized that bit of procrastination so efficiently?). There was something that had been in the back of my mind for a while now.
My mother bought a Toyota Prius a little while back, which is a very nice Hybrid. Aside from the obvious Hybrid engine coolness it comes with a built in computer touch screen. The screen will display a GPS map, radio station, climate controls, and a real time status view of the hybrid system. I wondered if I could have something simular in my car. I had heard of people putting computers in their cars, so I googled ‘car computer’ and found a ton of hits.
The one that impressed me the most was Mp3car.com. This site has a store with everything you need to buy and build a car pc and a great forum filled with talented people who have been doing this for quite a while.
Now I have a new project. I have just recieved my 7 inch lilliput touchscreen display that I ordered from the mp3car store. I am planning to scroung most of the other parts together and see what I come up with. This should be fun…
